How to Watch EastEnders Tonight: 7.30pm on BBC One, 6am on iPlayer, Monday to Thursday

For years the rule was simple: EastEnders was on at half seven and you watched it or you heard about it at work. It's still on at half seven, but these days plenty of fans have seen it before they've had breakfast.

Here's how it works now. EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One, and each episode goes up on BBC iPlayer at 6am the same day. There's no Friday episode.

What time is EastEnders on tonight?

7.30pm to 8pm on BBC One, straight after The One Show. We've taken this week's dates from the BBC One London schedule, which lists four episodes, numbered 7399 to 7402.

Next week follows the same shape, starting with episode 7403 on Monday 21 September.

What time does EastEnders come out on iPlayer?

6am. TVmaze's UK streaming schedule lists each EastEnders episode on BBC iPlayer at 06:00 on its broadcast day, and that matches the four this week.

So by the time the 7.30pm showing starts, the episode has already been out for 13 and a half hours. If you're avoiding spoilers, that's the window to be careful on social media.

After broadcast the episodes stay together in the EastEnders collection on iPlayer, which is also the easiest way to catch up on a missed week. You'll need a TV licence to stream, as with anything on iPlayer, and it only works in the UK.

Is EastEnders on on Fridays?

No. The soap runs four nights, Monday to Thursday. On Friday 18 September BBC One's 7.30pm slot goes to The Travelling Auctioneers, followed by the Celebrity MasterChef final at 8pm.

What's happening in EastEnders this week?

Spoiler warning for the rest of this section. The BBC's own listings set the tone: on Monday Kat is devastated by what she discovers, and by Tuesday the whole Square is reeling.

Why isn't EastEnders on tonight?

If it's Friday, Saturday or Sunday, that's the normal pattern. On a Monday to Thursday, the likeliest reason is a major event on BBC One: big football tournaments, general election coverage and royal occasions have all moved soaps in the past.

Nothing like that is scheduled this week, and BBC One's weekday evenings look settled through to Thursday. BBC One's 7.30pm slot is EastEnders on all four nights. When a change does happen, we put it on our updates page with the new date.

Should I watch at 6am or 7.30pm?

It comes down to how much you care about spoilers against how much you like watching together. The 6am release suits commuters and anyone who wants to see it before the internet does.

The 7.30pm showing is still the shared moment, when the doof-doofs land for everyone at once. TV Guide UK lists subtitles and audio description for each BBC One showing this week, and both routes give you the same 30 minutes.

One more thing on timing. If you watch at 6am and then see the BBC One broadcast by accident in the evening, you're watching the same episode again, not a new one. Save yourself the half hour and switch over to Emmerdale's lead-in on ITV1 instead.

The official EastEnders YouTube channel posts clips, behind-the-scenes pieces and weekly round-ups rather than full new episodes. It's handy for a recap but it isn't a replacement for iPlayer.
