Soaps Tonight, Friday 18 September: Emmerdale at 8 and Coronation Street at 8.30, and That Is the Lot

Thursday gave soap viewers ninety unbroken minutes across two channels. Friday gives them sixty, on one, and then hands the evening over to a film and a cookery final.

That is not a schedule change and nothing has been dropped. Friday is simply the day when two of the four British soaps are not in production for broadcast, and the two that are sit back to back on ITV1 from 8pm.

The gist: Emmerdale at 8pm, Coronation Street at 8.30pm, both on ITV1, both already on ITVX since breakfast. No EastEnders, no Hollyoaks.

What time are the soaps on tonight?

TimeSoapChannelEpisodeStreaming
8pmEmmerdaleITV1Series 55, ep 172ITVX from 7am
8.30pmCoronation StreetITV1Series 67, ep 172ITVX from 7am

A small coincidence worth noting for anyone who keeps count: the two ITV soaps reach episode 172 of their respective series on the same night. Emmerdale got there a week later than it should have, because Wednesday's Carabao Cup coverage cost it an episode.

Is EastEnders on tonight?

No. EastEnders runs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and does not have a Friday episode. BBC One puts The Travelling Auctioneers in the 7.30pm slot tonight and the Celebrity MasterChef final at 8pm.

The week's four episodes finished on Thursday, and our Thursday round-up covers them. The full picture of when and where it airs is in the EastEnders guide.

What happens in Emmerdale tonight?

ITV's billing for episode 172 keeps it short: Sadie has a piece of news that lands like a grenade and a hostile run-in with Kim, while Lewis is thrown by an answer he did not want. That is the whole published summary, and we do not invent the rest.

Our morning preview, Tomorrow's Soaps for Friday, is the place we put the spoiler detail as it is published; this page is the times and the streaming.

Friday soaps: Emmerdale 8pm and Coronation Street 8.30pm on ITV1, both on ITVX from 7am, no EastEnders and no Hollyoaks
Friday is the shortest soap night of the week: one hour, one channel.

Is there a Coronation Street episode tonight?

Yes, at 8.30pm, running to 9pm. ITV has not put a billing on the ITVX page for this one, so we have the slot and the episode number and nothing else. Since January 2026 Corrie has run as five half-hours a week rather than longer episodes, which is why Friday still has one when Emmerdale's week has been shortened. The ITV soap times guide explains the 8pm hour.

Is Hollyoaks on tonight?

No. E4 shows Hollyoaks on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only, with the same episodes arriving on Channel 4 streaming at 7am on those days. There is no Thursday or Friday episode to miss. Our Hollyoaks guide has the pattern and the catch-up routes.

How far ahead of tonight could I have watched?

Thirteen hours. Both ITV soaps went up on ITVX at 7am, so anyone who wanted Friday's episodes before the school run has had them all day. That head start is the single biggest difference between the ITV soaps and EastEnders, which drops at 6am on iPlayer but only on the four days it airs.

What is on next week?

Seventeen episodes, which is two more than this week. Hollyoaks returns on Monday, EastEnders runs Monday to Thursday, and both ITV soaps have a full five-night week with no football in the way. We have the day-by-day grid in next week's soap line-up, and the week just finishing is in this week's schedule.

Questions readers ask

Why does Emmerdale have four episodes this week instead of five? ITV1 carried live football on Wednesday 16 September, which took out both soaps that night. We wrote it up in why Corrie was not on.

Is there an omnibus this weekend? Not on ITV1. The catch-up route is ITVX, where the week's episodes stay available.

What else is on tonight if the soaps finish at 9? ITV1 follows Corrie with Beat the Chasers at 9pm — our sister site has Friday's quiz times.
